Choose the best answer to each question.Do you ever automatically say “God bless you” when someone sneezes (打喷嚏)? Did you ever cross your fingers when making a wish? Most people who do these things never think about why they do them. They just do them. But there is a reason. Both acts are meant to insure good luck. They are superstitions that have come down to us from an earlier time, when everybody believed in good and devil spirits. Even in our modern world, when men are traveling to the moon, we are still practicing some of these ancient habits in our daily lives. In ancient times, men believed that the soul lived in the head. Every time when someone sneezed, he was risking the danger of forcing that soul out and blowing it out of the nose into the outside world. So, as protection against a lost soul, people would say “God bless you” to be sure that God would catch the soul and return it to its rightful owner.Similarly, in earlier times, men felt that the cross was a lucky sign. The point where the two lines of a cross met was the luckiest spot, for if you made a wish on this spot, the wish would be held between these two lines and not get loose. So, people crossed their fingers when they made a wish. A wish bound forever in this way would eventually have to come true. Moreover, since the evil spirits stood on the left, and the good spirits on the right, the right side was always considered the lucky side of the body. Putting your best foot forward meant starting out on the lucky side, with your right foot first. That was a guarantee of good luck at whatever you were about to do. We still speak of “putting your best foot forward,” although we don’t always start walking with the right foot. Each of these little good-luck habits once had a serious purpose. Although people no longer believe in evil spirits, they are still crossing their fingers or putting their best foot forward – just to be sure that good luck comes their way.(阅读理解习题为11-20题,请各位同学顺序作答)What makes it difficult for strangers from different countries to become friends?

In fact, researchers report that the interactive and increasingly descriptive nature of some video games makes them “potentially more dangerous” than violence-charged television and movies.Psychologists Anderson and Dill conducted two studies. In one study of 227 college students, the investigators found that students who more frequently played violent video games during junior high and high school were more likely to have engaged in “aggressive behavior”. A second study in which 210 college students played either a violent or non-violent video game revealed that the violence-packed game increased subjects’ aggression immediately afterward. In the first study, the investigators questioned students on their natural levels of aggression and irritability (易怒性), and their delinquent (犯法的) behavior – for instance, whether they had hit other students in the past year. The investigators found that students with aggressive personalities and those who more often played violent video games were more likely to show real-life aggression. Students who considered themselves aggressive were also more likely to play violent video games. Since aggressive people may seek out violent games, coming to the conclusion that the video games caused real-life delinquency is too risky. However, the second study linked video-game violence with immediate increases in aggression. Anderson and Dill had students play either a violent game or a non-violent game, and let the students believe they were playing against an opponent in another room. After completing the video game, participants played a competitive-reaction game with their imaginary opponents (对手); in this game the winner was allowed to punish the loser with loud sounds. The researchers found that students who were fresh from the violent video game gave their opponents loud sounds longer than those who played the non-violent game.Because video games show short-term and long-term effects, Anderson and Dill suppose that video-game violence influences behavior not by arousing aggressive feelings, but by teaching players to find “aggressive solutions” to problems. Unlike TV, many video games demand that players identify with the aggressor and actively participate in violence.(阅读理解习题为11-20题,请各位同学顺序作答)Which is not mentioned as an example of rudeness in Paragraph 1?

Choose the best answer to each question. Many students choose to study abroad in order to gain international experience. What many of them don’t realize, however, is that living in another country for a long period of time may cause moderate to severe feelings of anxiety. Culture shock is the term given to the feelings of loss, surprise, and confusion (困惑) that many people feel when they live abroad. Scientists have noted that everyone experiences culture shock in different ways and for different amounts of time. However, there are four general stages of culture shock that can occur in any order, including excitement, rejection, regression, and recovery. The first stage of culture shock is typical excitement because the travelers are interested in all of the differences found in the new country. They may be amazed at the beautiful new scenery, enjoy the delicious new food, and simply enjoy experiencing the new sights and sounds. While the excitement stage is fun and exciting, it also ends fairly quickly as the travelers meet difficulty adjusting (适应) to life in the new country. Because life is so different in the new country, the foreigners experience many unexpected difficulties as they enter the second stage of culture shock, the rejection stage. This is the time when the foreigners begin to feel upset because of the differences, and they may start to complain about the host country. In the regression stage, the foreigners lovingly remember their home country. They forget about all of the troubles and problems they had in their home country and wish they could return. At this stage, the foreigners will try to regress, or go back, to their home country in some ways. Once the regression stage passes, they move into the fourth stage, the recovery stage. In this stage, they become used to the new culture. The differences are not new or troublesome anymore, and they begin to accept the customs of the new country and feel more comfortable.(阅读理解习题为11-20题,请各位同学顺序作答)The author did the following part-time jobs except for ________.

Choose the best answer to each question. For many people today, reading is no longer relaxation. To keep up their work they must read letters, reports, trade publications, interoffice communications, not to mention newspapers and magazines: a never-ending flood of words. In getting a job or advancing in one, the ability to read and comprehend quickly can mean the difference between success and failure. Yet the unfortunate fact is that most of us are poor readers. Most of us develop poor reading habits at an early age, and never get over them. The main problem lies in language itself – words. Single words have little meaning until they are combined into phrases, sentences and paragraphs. Unfortunately, however, the untrained reader does not read groups of words. He reads one word at a time, often regressing to reread words or passages. Regression, or looking back over what you have just read, is a common bad habit in reading. Another habit which slows down the speed of reading is vocalization – sounding each word either orally or mentally as one reads. To overcome these bad habits, some reading clinics use a device called accelerator (加速器), which moves a bar down the page at a predetermined speed. The bar is set at a slightly faster rate than the reader finds comfortable, in order to “stretch” him. The accelerator forces the reader to read fast, making word-by-word reading, regression and vocalization virtually impossible. At first, comprehension is sacrificed for speed. But when you learn to read ideas, you will not only read faster, but your comprehension will improve. Many people have found their reading skills improved a lot after some training.(阅读理解习题为11-20题,请各位同学顺序作答)Growing children need money stimulation.
