案例分析题Though only a dot in the South China Sea, Macau played a key role in the quest by several Qing Dynasty emperors to broaden their outlook and learn the secrets of the universe. By way of Macau, European science and art, as well as an array of innovations, flowed in a continuous stream into the imperial palace in Beijing. To commemorate the unique role that the small place played in the cultural exchange between East and West, the Macau Museum of Art is presenting until March 11 the exhibition “Splendors of a Flourishing Age---Treasures from the Forbidden City”. One hundred and twenty Qing Dynasty art treasures have been selected from the approximately one million works in the Beijing Palace Museum. The exhibits reflect the glory of Chinese culture and the union of Chinese and Western art. Among the 60 painting are the famous “Kang Xi Visits the South” and “Qian Long Visits the South”. There are also 60 examples of porcelain works, enamel-ware and Western instruments made in the Qing imperial palace. Viewers of there stunning works will be impressed by the forcefulness and skill of Qing Dynasty art. The dynasty dates from the mid-17th century, when the Manchus, skillful horsemen and brave warriors, conquered the China Plain and founded a new regime under the emperor Shun Zhi. His successor, Emperor Kang Xi, brought stability and peace, and cultural activity flourished. Kang Xi sought out the scholarly Western missionaries who had been active in China for several years. In 1715, when he learned that the Western artist Giuseppe Castiglione and a surgeon had entered China from Macau, Kang Xi immediately put pen to paper: “:Let it be known the Westerners should come quickly to the capital.” Throughout the reigns of Kang Xi, Yong Zheng and Qian Long, vibrant artistic activity was the norm in the imperial palace, and the clear distinctions between Western art and the art of the imperial nobility gradually faded as the two forms because inextricably intertwined.
