听力原文: Many artists late in the last century were in search of a means to express their individuality. Modern dance was one of the ways some of these people sought to free their creative spirit. At the beginning there was no exact technique, no foundation from which to build. In later years, trial, error, and genius founded the techniques and the principles of the movement. Eventually, innovators even drew from what they considered the dreadful ballet, but first they had to discard all that was academic so that the new could be discovered. The beginnings of modern dance were happening before Isadora Duncan, but she was the first person to bring the new dance to general audiences and see it accepted and acclaimed.
Her search for natural movement form. sent her to nature. She believed movement should be as natural as the swaying of the trees and the rolling waves of the sea, and should be in harmony with the movements of the Earth. Her great contributions are in three areas.
First, she began the expansion of the kinds of movements that could be used in dance. Before Duncan danced, ballet was the only type of dance performed in concert. In the ballet the feet and legs were
hasized, with virtuosity shown by complicated movements. Duncan performed dance by using all
body in the freest possible way. Her dance stemmed from her soul and spirit. She was one of the pioneers who broke tradition so others might be able to develop the art.
Her second contribution lies in dance costume. She discarded ballet shoes and stiff costumes. These were replaced with bare feet, and unbound hair. She believed in thenatural body being allowed to move freely, and her dress displayed this ideal.
Her third contribution was in the use of music. In her performances she used the symphonies of great masters, including Beethoven and 'Wagner, which was not the usual custom.
She was as exciting and eccentric in her personal life as in her dance.

听力原文:W:Hi,John!
M:Oh,Hi,Laura.What're you doing here?
W: Uh... I'm usually here on weekends. It's my dad's shop. So... you're looking for a bike?
M: Yeah. Now that the weather's warming up, I thought I'd get some exercise—instead of taking the bus all the time.
W: Well, you came to the right place. Do you know what you'd like?
M: Well, I don't want a racer or a touring bike or anything. Mostly I'll just be using it to get me back and forth from work.
W: How far is that?
M: About four miles.
W: Are there a lot of hills on the way?
M: Some, I guess. But... uh... maybe I should just tell you up front that I've only got a hundred and fifty dollars. Can I get anything decent for that?
W: Well, you're not going to get anything top-of-the-line--but we do have a few trade-ins in the back that' re in good condition.
M: That sounds good.
W: And you're right, for the kind of riding you're going to be doing, the most important thing is comfort. You want to make sure it's the right height for you. Follow me and I'll show you what we've got.

听力原文:M: Did you watch" Undersea Discovery" last night?
W: No, I missed it. Did you?
M: Yeah. It was pretty good--it was about barnacles.
W: Hmm.
M: You know how they stick themselves to stuff in the ocean-like rocks or boats?
W: Uh-huh.
M: Well, they do that when they're young, and then they stay in the same place forever.
W: It figures. Have you ever tried removing one of those things? Last summer I tried to scrape some off a pier—I had to give up after a while. You'd think they wouldn't be able to stick like that underwater.
M: Yeah. These biomedical researchers were talking about its possible uses. Orthopedists could use it for mending broken bones; or it could be used in dentistry.
W: I wish I'd seen that.
