听力原文:M: Hi, Sue.
W: Hello, Jill, how are you?
M: I'm fine. Did you watch the TV special about barnacles last night?
W: No, I missed it. What did you learn about them?
M: They glue themselves to rocks in the ocean, shortly after birth. They also stay in the same place forever.
W: Right, have you ever tried removing one of these things? It would be easier to chip the rock away than to get the barnacles off.
M: Exactly, and that's why scientists are trying to figure out what the barnacles glue is made of. It's considered one of the strongest adhesives in nature.
W: And it would have the advantage of being able to work on wet surfaces too.
M: Precisely, and because it's natural protein, it probably wouldn't be harmful to people like so many synthetic glues in use today.
W: Think of all the ways in which doctors and dentists could use such a glue to mend broken bones and fasten false teeth.
M: There could be countless uses. Scientists hope to learn soon exactly how the glue is made, so that people can make use of it.
W: That's good news for the general public. I hope it won't take long for the new glue to be put into use.

Section B
Directions: There are 2 passages in this section. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice.
You've heard of Google. You've no doubt heard of Yahoo, too. But do you really know how to use them? If you're frustrated by search engines that give you unrelated responses ... if you're spending too much time just looking for online resources ... , read on to learn a few useful online search strategies, which will help you find what you're looking for and save you precious online time.
Before you type a search string in the search box of your favorite search engine, take a few minutes to come up with a precise description of what you're looking for. Let's say that you're interested in information about animals of the ocean. If you type that phrase into Google's search box, for example, you'll get close to 19 million hits. Put quotation marks (" ") around the phrase--"animals of the ocean" -- and you'll get just 531 hits: Why? Because the quotation marks direct the search engine to find only pages that contain that exact phrase. Without the quotes, the search engine will find every page containing the word animals and every page containing the word ocean. (Most search engines ignore such words as "of" and "the". ) So whenever you have more than one word in your search string, use quotes!
Let's say you're looking for "videos of humpback whales in the North Atlantic." Type that exact phrase into Google's search box (sometimes a good way to start a search!) and you'll get 0 hits. A search for whales turns up 12.8 million hits. A search for "humpback whales" narrows it to 660,000 hits. Still too many to work with!
Now, try the plus () sign. The search term "humpback whales" +videos yields 41,100 hits. The plus () sign directs the search engine to find pages that have all the words or phrases found in the search string. Want still fewer hits? Type in "humpback whales" + videos + "North Atlantic"; the number of hits is reduced to just 746.
The minus (-) sign also comes in handy for narrowing a search. The search term "humpback whales" + videos + "North Atlantic" -Pacific returns 339 hits. The minus sign (-) directs the search engine to leave out any pages that have the designated word or phrase. It limits your search to a more precise collection of pages.
The purpose of this passage is to provide you with information on ______.

A. how to reduce the number of hits
B. how to find videos of humpback whales in the North Atlantic
C. the importance of maths in building a search string
D. how to use search engines on the Web more efficiently
