In New England and elsewhere there are fine dairy, fruit, and vegetable farms, but the richest farmlands of the world lie in the American Middle West. Enormous crops of corn and wheat are grown there. Some of the corn and wheat is sold to feed people of the United States and other countries, but most of it is used to fatten pigs and cattle. Pork and beef, in turn, are sold as food. There are several reasons why the Middle West is so favorable for farming. The soils are rich and deep. There is usually just the right combination of sun and rain. There is a long enough period in late spring, summer, and early fall when no frost comes to kill the crops. The land is mostly level, so that modern farm machinery can be easily used. Perhaps most important, American farmers have learned from scientists in colleges and universities how to raise better crops and animals, and how to get the most out of the soil without destroying it.
The Midwestern and northeastern parts of the United States are the world's richest farming regions, but they are also the world's busiest factory regions. These two facts work together. The millions of city dwellers who work in the factories cannot live without the products of the farms, such as the wholesome milk that comes from the glistening Wisconsin dairy farm. Farmers, in turn, need the farm machinery, the automobiles and trucks, and many other products made by the city dwellers.
Most of corn and wheat is______________.

A. sold to feed people
B. exported to foreign countries
C. sold to fatten cattle and pigs
D. sold as food

In general, there are four kinds of conflict: conflict between people, conflict with one self, conflict with nature, and conflict with society. The most common conflict is between people. A fist fight, for example, is certainly conflict between two people. Competition for the job of head cheerleader or class president is also conflict among people. But there are qui et conflicts between children and parents, and students and teachers. There are conflicts over jobs in business.
People also find conflict within themselves. A guilty conscience is a form. of inner conflict. Struggling to decide what to do in a certain situation is also a personal conflict. Will you go to college or not? Will you follow someone else's advice or your own? Will you break off with a friend? All of these questions that require soul-searching and decision-making are personal or inner conflicts.
Conflicts with the forces of nature arise, too. A trapper lost in a snowstorm is in conflict with nature. So is someone who is making his way through the forest. And fighting a swift river on a raft is also conflict with nature. Finally, a person may be in conflict with society. This would describe a criminal with a grudge against the world. Or a conflict with society might involve a homeowner whose house is in the way of a new highway. An animal character faced with the destruction of its forest home is also in conflict with society.
The best title for the passage is___________.

A. How to Prevent Conflict
B. Conflicts with Forces of Nature
C. Various Kinds of Conflict
D. The Most Common Conflict

SECTION B PASSAGES
Directions: In this section, you will hear several passages. Listen to the passages carefully and then answer the questions that follow.
听力原文: When we think of communication, we normally think of using words talking face-to-face, writing messages and so on. But in fact we communicate far more in other ways. Our eyes and facial expressions usually tell the truth even when our words do not.
Then there are gestures, often unconscious: raising the eyebrows, rubbing the nose, shrugging the shoulders, tapping the fingers, nodding and shaking the head. There is also the even more subtle "body language" of posture: are you sitting or standing with arms or legs crossed.'? Is that person standing with hands in pockets, held in front of the body or hidden behind? Even the way we dress and the colors we wear communicate things to others.
So. do animals communicate? Not in words, although a parrot might be trained to repeat words and phrases which it doesn't understand. But as we have learnt, there is more to communicate than words. Take dogs for example. They bare their teeth to warn, wag their tails to welcome and stand firm, with hair erect, to challenge. These signals are surely the canine equivalent of the human body language of facial expression, gesture and posture.
What are the ways animals communicate?

A. Words.
B. Gesture and posture.
C. Facial expressions.
D. Special signals.
