S. view educator, s, More than 300 Chinese teachers have been learning first-hand that Americans tend not to hold educators in as high a regard as many Chinese people do. These teachers are in the U.S. thanks to a partnership between China’s Education Ministry and the U. S. College Board. They are teaching Chinese language and culture to U. S. high school students and are themselves learning a lot--like how little U. S. teachers are paid, and how much teachers must cater to the needs of their students. "This country doesn’t value teachers, and that upsets me," Zheng Yue, a Chinese teacher working in the U.S. state of Oklahoma, told The New York Times. "Teachers don’t earn much, and this country worships making money. In China, teachers don’t earn a lot either, but it’s a very honorable career. " Teachers like Zheng have also learned that students are treated differently in the U. S.. Once, while trying to explain a vocabulary quiz, a student who was not paying attention asked, "What are we supposed to be doing" Zheng patiently repeated her instructions, but she said later how surprised she had been. "In China, if you teach the students and they don’t get it, that’s their problem," she told The Times. "Here if they don’t get it, you teach it again." In the end, Zheng says she’s not overly ambitious about what she is trying to accomplish in the classroom. "I want my students to have a sweet, sweet memory of taking Chinese," she said.
