Passage 40 Every artist knows in his heart that he is saying something to the public. Not only does he want to say it well, but he wants it to be something which has not been said before. He hopes that the public will listen and understand--he wants to teach them, and he wants them to learn from him. What visual artists like painters want to teach is easy to make out but difficult to explain, because painters translate their experiences into shapes and colors, not words. (40) They seem to feel that a certain selection of shapes and colors, out of the countless billions possible, is exceptionally interesting for them and worth showing to us. Without their work we would never have noticed these particular shapes and colors, or have felt the delight which they brought to the artist. Most artists take their shapes and colors from the world of nature and from human bodies in motion and stillness; their choices indicate that these aspects of the world are worth looking at, that they contain beautiful sights. Contemporary artists might say that they merely choose subjects that provide an interesting pattern, and that there is nothing more in it, yet even they do not choose entirely without reference to the character of their subjects. If one painter chooses to paint an injured leg and another a lake in moonlight, each of them is directing our attention to a certain aspect of the world. Each painter is telling us something, showing us something, emphasizing something--all of which means that, consciously or unconsciously, he is trying to teach us. Compared with a painter of unpleasant subjects, a painter who draws a lake in moonlight is______.

A. conveying more meaning
B. more skilled
C. pointing to something different
D. communicating less

Passage 35 It seems that beauty and women are twins. You are joking No, I am not. Observe for yourself. Ads on fashion flood TV screens, radio programs, magazines, newspapers and the streets. Whether they have realized it or not, women are besieged (包围) by a sea of fashion. They are taught to think that without beautiful clothes they will grow old and lose their charm. So who dares to neglect dressing up at the cost of their appearance and youth But I do not agree with the opinion that women have to show their beauty through their looks. The richness of their mind proves to be more beautiful and attractive than their looks. (35) A woman who has experienced many troubles and may be called "aunt" or "granny" can still maintain her beauty if she has such excellent qualities as knowledge, ability, a kind heart, great courage and concern for others. In addition, old and young, beautiful and ugly are relative concepts. A person who keeps a young mind will never feel old. Curious about new things and eager to learn more, they keep up with the tide. Plainly dressed women may have a type of beauty, which is pure and real. Reading and learning is the best way to keep one youthful. Good books are fertile soil which can feed the flower of one’s heart and looks. The author believes that______.

A. women should lay more emphasis on their own qualities
B. beautiful clothes can make women more attractive
C. women have to show their beauty through their looks
D. women are more curious about new things than men

Passage 46 Although Beethoven could sit down and make up music easily, his really great compositions did not come easily at all. They cost him a great deal of hard work. We know how often he rewrote and corrected his work because his notebooks are still kept in museums and libraries. He always found it hard to satisfy himself. When he was 28, the worst difficulty of all came to him. He began to notice a strange humming(嗡嗡声) in his ears. At first he paid little attention; but it grew worse, and at last he consulted doctors. (46) They gave him the worst news any musician could bear: he was gradually going deaf. Beethoven was in despair; he was sure that he was going to die. He went away to the country, to a place called Heiligenstadt, and from there he wrote a long farewell letter to his brothers. He longed to die, and said to death, "Come when you will, I shall meet you bravely." In fact, Beethoven did something braver than dying. He gathered his courage and went on writing music, though he could not hear what he wrote. He wrote his best music, the music we remember him for, after he became deaf. The music he wrote was very different from any that had been composed before. After he was told he would become deaf, ______.

A. Beethoven was so sad that he gave up composing
Beethoven wrote his music better than ever before
C. Beethoven’s compositions became worse and worse
D. Beethoven asked his brothers for help

Passage 45 Do you ever feel sick, confused, or very tired after a long plane ride If you were fly-ing east to west or west to east, the problem could have been jet lag. (45) Jet lag happens when your body’s time clock becomes confused. Crossing several time zones may make you feel very tired. You may become confused because you are tired. In fact, you may become so confused that you won’t be able to do your work. You might get headaches and feel that you have problems eating and sleeping. These are all symptoms of jet lag. However, if you feel tired after flying from north to south or south to north, you do not have jet lag. Maybe you feel tired from the tiredness and work of getting ready for the trip. You will feel better after you get some sleep. The symptoms that you feel during a flight, such as thirst and motion sickness, are not jet lag either. They are caused by the air pressure in the plane. When you travel north or south, you do not cross time zones. So you do not have true jet lag. What is jet lag

A. The tired and confused feeling that you get after flying.
Being unable to catch the plane.
C. Being too heavy to be on the plane.
