TEXT I What is history Every historian would agree, I think, that history is a kind of research or inquiry. Generically it belongs to what we call the sciences: that is, the forms of thought whereby we ask questions and try to realize, does not consist in collecting what we already know and arranging it in this or that kind of pattern. It consists in fastening upon something we do not know, and trying to discover it. Playing patience with things we already know may be a useful means towards this end, but it is not the end itself. It is at best only the means. It is scientifically valuable only in so far as the new arrangement gives us the answer to questions we have already decided to ask. That is why all science begins from the knowledge of our own ignorance of some definite thing--the origin of life, the cause of cancer, the chemical composition of the sun. Science is finding things out: and in that sense history is a science. History is a science in that ______.
A. it belong to genetics
B. it puts known facts in one pattern or another
C. it raises questions and seeks to answer them
D. it collects facts already known

Karl Wilhelm Rontgen (36) people with the first x-rays in 1895; this was (37) three years later by the discovery of radium by Pierre and Marie Curie. But who were they In 1894, Marie and Pierre Curie met while studying in Paris. Their marriage on 25th July 1895 marked the start of a (38) which was to receive worldwide recognition. The Curies discovered radium, a (39) substance, in uranium oxide ore. They developed techniques for (40) it, but first did not fully understand its (41) Pierre Curie used to carry radium around in his waistcoat pocket and could not understand why he was developing a massive (42) on his chest. This would have been (43) , but Pierre’s life was cut short in 1906 when he was knocked down and killed by a horse and cart in the street. (44) . Marie and Pierre Curie were awarded a joint Nobel Prize in 1904, followed up by a second one for Marie in 1911. Their research was crucial in the development of x-rays in surgery. (45) . The International Red Cross made her head of its Radiological Service and she held training courses for medical orderlies and doctors in the new techniques. (46) . She died in 1934 from leukaemia, due to exposure to high-energy radiation used in her research. Radiation has since been used to treat cancer worldwide.
Most young people enjoy some form of physical activity. It may be walking, cycling, or swimming, or in winter, skating or skiing. It may be a game of some (26) --football, hockey, golf or tennis. It may be mountaineering. Those who have a passion (27) climbing high and difficult mountains are often (28) with astonishment. Why are men and women willing to (29) cold and hardship, and to take risks on high mountains This astonishment is caused, however, by the difference between mountaineering and other forms of activity (30) men give their leisure. Mountaineering is a sport and not a game. There are no man-made rules, (31) there are for such games as golf and football. There are, (32) , rules of a different kind which would be dangerous to (33) , but it is this freedom from man-made rules that makes mountaineering (34) to many people. Those who climb mountains are (35) to use their own methods. If we compare mountaineering and other more (36) sports,we might think that one big difference is that mountaineering is not a ’team game’. We should be mistaken (37) this. There are, it is true, no ’matches’ between ’teams’ of climbers, but when climbers are on a rock face (38) by a rope on which their lives may depend, there is (39) team work. The mountain climber knows that he may have to fight forces that are stronger and more powerful than man. He has to fight the forces of (40) . His sport requires high mental and physical qualities.
