Although negotiation is a difficult art, there are certain things that can be done to help the inexperienced negotiator upgrade his or her skills. . It is an (147) fact that many people go into negotiations without having done their homework properly. They usually do not take the time to investigate the actual market situation or needs of the other side. This is a critical mistake that often leads to an unsatisfactory outcome. One likely result is that the negotiations may break down and no concrete result can be achieved. And in many cases, (148) an agreement can be reached, it may not be practical or durable as both parties retain ongoing doubts and mistrust about the other. In such a situation, the business relationship may not last very long. The best way to avoid such misunderstandings is to make preparation sheets listing a group of vital questions before sitting down with his or her counterparts. Many negotiators have found that these sheets are an effective way of forcing them (149) on the key issues of the negotiation they are about to enter.
