SECTION B PASSAGES
Directions: In this section, you will hear several passages. Listen to the passages carefully and then answer the questions that follow.
听力原文: The idea of helping people comes naturally to most of us. If we see a blind person getting off a bus, we watch to make sure that he is in no danger of falling. Members of a family help one another, with particular care for the very young and the elderly.
There are many people who have nobody near to see their need for help and often nobody to give it even when the need is known. The old, the handicapped, the homeless and friendless-these are the people for whom help may not come, because nobody sees. It may not have occurred to you that you are in a position to help. Community service means helping the people around you. These organizations depend on voluntary help to carry out a wide variety of tasks, volunteers giving up a little of their spare time to lend a hand.
If you wish to take part in this worthwhile activity, what sort of things would you do? Think of the people most
in need of help and the ways in which help can be given. Much of the work of community service is concerned with the care of the elderly and the handicapped. Old people cannot always redecorate their homes. Household responsibilities such as cleaning, preparing food or taking care of the garden may all prove difficult. Elderly people with fail- ing eyesight are delighted if a friend comes in to read or to write letters for them. A helping hand and a friendly face can mean a great deal to a lonely elderly person.
What does community service mean?

A. Helping the poor.
B. Offering medical service to patients.
C. Helping people around you.
D. Feeding birds in the parks near your community.

听力原文: Native Americans lived in America before Columbus arrived. They had songs for many occasions and they used drums and other musical instruments. Dancing and music was an important part of their life and their religion. You can still hear American music and see dancing at special festivals.
The first British people who came to America were very religious. They came for religious freedom. Their songs were simple and they did not use musical instruments in the church. Soon other people with different forms of the Christian religion arrived in America. They brought different kinds of church music from Europe and they used musical instruments, like the organ and the piano, in the church.
Not all early music was church music. Some people liked to drink and dance. Many drinking places opened and fiddle music and European songs entertained the People. American farmers soon left the east coast to begin new farms further west. The farms were big and far apart. There were not many towns or churches. Religious leaders, called preachers, rode horses around the country and brought religion to the farm people. They held "camp meeting" which often went on for several weeks. Popular religious songs were sung and the music was very lively. Many pop stars, like Elvis Presley, first learned to sing and to love music at these meetings.

A. musical instruments
B. religious prays
C. festival banners
D. camp tents
