And according to UNEP, 5 611 species of plants will also be wiped out-but since only 4% of the world’s plant species have been examined in detail, that figure will probably be much higher.UNEP blames a variety of causes, from poverty and overpopulation to pollution, global warming and profit-driven economic and trade policies. But there is some good news. There has been an 85% reduction in the use of chemicals, for instance. And around 10% of the earth’s surface is in protected areas like national parks, five times as much as 30 years ago."We can never know for certain what lies before us," said a UNEP official.
