Passage Four There is one thing that everyone wants more than anything else. Some people try to get it by making money. They think that when they have enough money to buy such things as houses, farms, and cars, they will have the one thing that everyone wants. Other people believe that if they know enough they will find this thing. They study all their lives in search of it. Still others think that if they have power, they will find this thing. They keep telling themselves: when I am a boss, I will no longer have to search for this thing. What is it that everyone wants more than anything else What is it that all of us keep working and striving for each day It is happiness. Happiness is a strange thing. Passage Five Californian Michael Schwabe said goodbye to the gas pump two years ago. He leased an electric car. Schwabe says he gets more out of driving an electric car than just a charge. "With the price of gasoline and with the problems with clean air, it’s important we get electric vehicles out on the road." On California roads there are about two thousand electric cars. By 2003, ten percent of all new cars may be required to have zero emissions. This is a mandate automakers say it is way ahead of its time. Gloria Bergquist of the Alliance of Auto Manufacturers says, "The technology (for zero emissions) isn’t here yet; it still needs advancement in driving range to make it more appealing to a wider consumer audience ." Automakers blame it on the batteries. Power runs out on most cars after about 70 miles. However, some cars can now go more than 100 miles on a charge. Batteries are expensive. Carmakers say there is nothing they can do about it. Tim Carmichael of the Clean Air Coalition says, "The automakers have not built a vehicle unless required to do so, so it’s very important for the state to stay committed to this program requiring automakers to build small amounts in beginning years and then the market will take off." Right now the California Air Resources Board requires that a percentage of new cars sold should be flee of emissions. What is that percentage()
A. 1%.
B. 5%.
C. 10%.
D. 100%.

Passage Two A hundred years ago, the game we now call football did not exist. American football started during a game between two colleges. The teams had got together to play what they called "football", but each team played by different roles. One team played what we now call soccer. The other played what we now call rugby (橄榄球) . Both games had been invented a thousand years before. In the first kind of football game ever played, all the men from one village tried to kick a ball into another village. The men of the second village tried to kick the ball into the first. Hundreds of people joined in, running everywhere, running crops and knocking down fences. In time, people agreed on some rules to keep order, but many rules were left open to change. Different rules developed in different places. When the two colleges met to play football, each followed its own rules. They mixed the games together and invented a new game. A hundred years later we call that game American football.
