Such goals can be achieved in a week or less. or two weeks, or possible months. It should be remembered that just as a building is no stronger than its foundation, our long-term goals cannot amount to very much without the achievement of solid short-term goals. Upon completing our short-term goals, we should date the occasion and then add new short-range goals that will build on those that have been completed. The intermediate goals build on the foundation of the short-range goals. They might deal with just one term of school or the entire school year, or they could even extend for several years. Any time you move a step at a time, you should never allow yourself to become discouraged or over-whelmed. As you complete each step, you will enforce the belief in your ability to grow and succeed. And as your list of completion dates grows, your motivation and desire will increase. Long-range goals may be related to our dreams of the future. When people say that Cambridge is a university town they do not mean that it is a town with a university in it. A university town is one where there is no clear separation between the university buildings and the rest of the city. The university is not just one part of the town; it is all over the town. The heart of Cambridge has its shops, restaurants, market places and so on, but most of it is university—colleges, libraries, clubs and other places for university staff and students. The town was there first. Cambridge became a center of learning in the thirteenth century. Many students were too poor to afford lodgings. Colleges were opened so that students could live cheaply. This was the beginning of the present day college system. Today there are nearly thirty colleges. Very few students can now live in college for the whole of their course; the numbers are too great. Many of them live in lodgings at first and move into college for their final year. But every student is a member of his college from the beginning, he must eat a number of meals in the college hall each week. Students are not allowed to keep cars in Cambridge, so nearly all of them use bicycles. Don’t try to drive through Cambridge during the five minutes between lectures, as you will find crowds of people on bicycles hurrying in all directions. If you are in Cambridge at five minutes to the hour any morning of the term, you’ll know that you are in a university town. Stop in some place, and wait. What is impossible for the students to do in Cambridge
A. Have all the meals outside the college each week.
B. Keep bikes in the college.
C. Live in lodgings.
D. Live in college for their final year of the course.
