听力原文: A physician can expect to be called at arty hour of the day or night, wherever he is, whatever he is doing. It's just part of the job.
Dr. Sheeler was no exception. He, however, had received no calls from the Nelson family in quite some time and was a bit surprised when one night, shortly after he had fallen asleep, the phone rang and he heard, "Doctor, this is Jim Nelson. Come right away. My wife is in pain. At first it was not serious, but now the pain is very severe. She just sits here groaning and clutching her side. I'm sure it's appendicitis."
Recalling what he remembered about the Nelsons, Dr. Sheeler tried to calm the near-hysterical man at the other end of the line. "Now, now, Mr. Nelson, it can't be all that bad, probably just ind igestion. I'll come around the first thing in the morning."
"But, doctor, I'm sure it's her appendix. You've got to come now. My wife's life may be in danger!"
"That's absurd," the doctor said disapprovingly, now somewhat irritated at the other man's insistence. "I took your wife's appendix out two years ago. You know as well as I do that she hasn't got another one."
"I know that, Dr. Sheeler," said the sad husband. "But last year I got another wife."
Dr. Sheeler was surprised at Mr. Nelson's call because
A. the new patient should not have known his phone number.
B. he seldom called at night.
C. the Nelsons had been very healthy.
D. the Nelsons had not called him for a long time.
听力原文:I: What made you take off to the country ill the first place, Tom?
T: Well, I suppose anyone who moves to the country wants their life to be different in some way. I mean, if you have always lived in a city, something must happen to make you want to move. In my case, I just couldn't face going back into an office again when it came to looking for a new job.
I: So you began thinking about the country?
T: No, at first I just thought about getting a different kind of work, social work with kids or old people.
I: And what happened? Why didn't you?
T: I haven't got any right diplomas, and it would have taken me two years to be qualified. I was not going back to formal education again.
I: So where did you decide to move?
T: I went right to Shropshire. The first problem though was how I could make a living — there are fewer jobs in the country, so I decided to start up on my own.
I: That's ambitious. How did you start, had you got any skills?
T: I'd always had a garden and grown some vegetables and flowers, so I thought of a small holding, a kind of farm. But when I looked at the price, I changed my mind.
I: Ok, a farm's out, so what next?
T: I settled on a nursery and bought my way into a partnership...
I: Well, ladies and gentlemen, don't go away — we are coming back to Tom's story after the advertisements.
Why did Tom go to live in the country?
A. Because he liked working with children.
Because he lost his job.
C. Because he hated the city.
D. Because he wanted to be a farmer.

Captain Scott performed many brave deeds, but perhaps his most remarkable act was the saving of hundreds men, women, and children who were crossing the Hudson River in a ferryboat. It was winter and the river was full of blocks of ice. As the ferry boat crossed the river, a tugboat ran into it. The collision cut a great V-shaped hole in its side. Men, women, and children were soon screaming with fright as the water poured into the engine room. In a few minutes the boat would have sunk, plunging all the passengers into the icy water.
Fortunately, Captain Scott happened to be passing in a river tugboat. He quickly pulled his boat up to the sinking ship and sprang to its deck. Rushing down to the engine room, he plugged the hole with everything he could find. Still, water came in. Then he thrust his arm into the hole and stopped the water with his body. For an hour he held back the water until the boat reached the dock and everyone was saved.
