W: Hello, dad?
M: Yes... Mary! How are you? Anything wrong?
W: Oh, no. I just wanted to call and see how you and Mom are. It's been quite a while since I saw you last time.
M: Oh, we're both fine. Your mother is down at the new shopping center shopping.
W: For a new dress?
M: No, for shoes this time, I think. How's David?
W: He's fine. He likes his work and was given a raise last month by Mr Smith. We are all pretty pleased about that.
M: Yes, I think you should be. And how are the children?
W: Well, George's home from school today. It's nothing serious, just a bad cold. And it's his birthday, too!
M: Oh, I thought his birthday was May 24th.
W: No. April 24th.
M: Well, that's too bad. Tell him we'll send him a present.
W: All right. Diana's still taking dancing lessons.
M: She must be pretty good by now. How about Tom?
W: He's OK, too. He's having a part-time job at a garage now.
M: Well, it's certainly good to hear your voice.
W: OK, dad. Nice talking to you and give Mom our love.
M: All right Good-bye.

Are you happy? Do you remember a time when you were happy? Are you seeking happiness today?
Many have sought a variety of sources for their feeling of happiness. Some have put their heart and efforts into their work. Too many turned to drugs and alcohol. Meanwhile, untold numbers have looked for it in the possession of expensive cars, exotic vacation homes and other popular "toys". Most of their efforts have a root in one common fact: people are looking for a lasting source of happiness.
Unfortunately, I believe that happiness escapes from many people because they misunderstand the journey of finding it. I have heard many people say that, "I'll be happy when I get my new promotion," or "I'11 be happy when I get that extra 20 pounds." It is dangerous because it accepts that happiness is a "response" to having, being or doing something.
In life, we all experience stimulus and response. Today, some people think that an expensive car is stimulus. Happiness is a response. A great paying job is stimulus. Happiness is a response. This belief leaves us thinking and feeling: "I'll be happy when ..."
It has been my finding that actually the opposite is true. I believe that happiness is a stimulus and response is what life brings to those who are truly happy. When we are happy, we tend to have more success in our work. When we are happy, we more naturally take better care of our bodies and enjoy good health. Happiness is not a response but a stimulus.
Happiness is a conscious choice we make in daily life. For unknown reasons to me, many choose to be upset and angry most of the time. Happiness is not something that happens to us after we get something we want—we usually get things we want after we choose to be happy.
From the second paragraph, we know too many people______.
A. are not happy when they work hard
B. are not happy when they drink or take drugs
C. all desire exotic vacation homes
D. are happy when they possess their own expensive cars
W: I recently read that in ten years we'll wearing clothes that changes with the weather. So when it's cold, our clothes will warm up, and when it's hot, our clothes will cool off.
M: Oh, very funny. So we'll be wearing huge clothes with built-in air conditioners and heaters?
W: I'm serious. Researchers have discovered a method of treating fibers with plastic crystals which can store and release heat as the temperature changes. These treated fibers absorb more heat than untreated fibers. Researchers are still working with this, but soon this process will be widespread.
M: That's fascinating. I didn't know that fibers could store heat. How does that work?
W: These fibers work with the heat by rearranging their structures.
M: That's truly unbelievable. You said that it'll be a decade before this type of clothes will be available. What a shame! I don't think I can wait that long.
