Passage 2Early in the 16th century men were trying to reach Asia by traveling west from Europe. In order to find Asia they had to find a way past South America. The man who eventually found the way from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific was Ferdinand Magellan. Magellan sailed from Seville in August 1519 with five ships and about 280 men. Fourteen months later, after spending the severe winter on the coast of Patagonia, he discovered the channel which is now called Magellan’s Straits. In November 1520, after many months of dangers from rocks and storms, the three remaining ships entered the ocean on the other side of South America. They then continued, hoping to reach Asia. But they did not see any land until they reached the islands off the coast of Asia. Before they arrived at these islands, later known as the Philippines, men were dying of starvation. While they were staying in the Philippines, Magellan was killed in battle. The remaining officers then had to get back to Spain. They decided to sail round Africa. After many difficulties, one ship with eighteen men sailed into Seville three years after leaving. They were all that remained of Magellan’s expedition. However, their achievement was great. They were the first men to sail round the world. According to the passage, which of the following statements is false?()
A. Ferdinand Magellan first found the way from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific.
B. Magellan’s five ships first reached the Pacific in 1520.
C. Magellan sailed from Seville in August 1519.
D. Magellan spent the winter of 1519 on the coast of Patagonia.

Passage 1Nuclear power is obtained from the energy which can be released from nucleus of an atom. Until the twentieth century man used water, wood and the fossil fuels (coal, oil and gas) as sources of power. During the first quarter of the twentieth century physicists investigated the structure of the atom. In 1919 Rutherford split the atom artificially. Thirteen years later, the neutron was discovered. In 1939 Hahn and Strassman investigated the action of neutrons on uranium-235. They found that it was split into two equal pieces. This process is known as fission. It releases great amount of energy. The neutrons that are released in fission produce fissions in other atoms. This is known as a chain reaction. On 2nd December 1942 Enrico Fermi and his colleagues produced the first controlled nuclear chain reaction. Since then atomic energy has been used in war and peace. In 1951 electricity was first produced by using the heat from a nuclear reactor. More and more countries are building nuclear power stations to produce electricity. Since () atomic energy has been used in war and peace around the world.
A. 1919
B. 1939
C. 1942
D. 1951
