When the steam engine was invented in the t8th century, it began one of the greatest revolutions in our world. The invention of the petrol engine at the end of the 19th century led to another enormous change in our lives. And the computer is almost certainly going to be no less important an invention than these engines were. Just as there was a Stone Age, an Iron Age and so on, we have been living for centuries in a Paper Age, when almost all information was kept and sent on paper. However, to provide us with this paper, numerous trees have to be cut down every year. But now, with the computer, enormous amounts of information can be stored and sent without any paper, using small discs or the Internet. Computers allow one to send information to others anywhere in the world, through the Internet, and to receive information from them. One can send a long message more quickly from England to Australia, for example, than from one’s house to someone in the garden. Computers are not only used for writing; they can produce diagrams and pictures, and can even be used for playing games. They are a common sight at airports and railway stations, in hotels and restaurants; in fact, almost everywhere. Which of the following functions of the computer is NOT mentioned in the passage

A. Offering entertainment.
B. Making phone calls.
C. Doing office and business work.
D. Sending information.

The idea of rain making is almost as old as man, but it was not until 1946 that man succeeded in making rain. In ancient times, rainmakers claimed(声称) to be able to bring rain by many methods: dancing, singing, killing various kinds of living creatures (including humans), and blowing a stream of water into the air from a kind of pipe. More recently, some rainmakers claimed to make rain by shooting guns, causing explosions, or burning chemicals, the smoke of which was supposed to cause rain to fall. These rainmakers asked for as much as 1,000 dollars to make an inch of rain. One was so effective that he was almost hanged. He was believed to have caused a twenty-inch rain in southern California that flooded that land, killed several people, and did millions of dollars’ worth of damage. Before 1946, rainmakers were either liars or honest people who happened to have good luck. Scientific rain making was started in that year by Vincent J. Schaefer, a scientist at the laboratories of the General Electric Company in New York State. His success was the result of a lucky accident that changed years of failure into victory. It has been about ______years since man succeeded in making rain.

A. 50
B. 55
C. 61
D. 70

I am twenty-eight years old. In 1996 I received my MS degree in Biochemistry from ABC University. As a student I took many Chemistry and Biology courses such as General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry(有机化学), Physical Chemistry and Biochemistry. As I was a graduate student, I worked as a research assistant for Dr. Wang Williams, Professor of Biochemistry, BBC California. During this time I assisted Dr. Wang in basic research concerning(关于) the genetic generation cycle in metabolism. I can supply you with a copy of the resulting paper at your request. Since my graduation I have been employed by MMC University as an assistant professor. I have continued my research in this time, and several of my papers have been published in Paris.
