While the world’s flu fighters have concentrated on countering the H1N1 swine flu, bird flu H5N1 has quietly continued to take its (62) on both poultry and humans. Last year, 17 countries, (63) from Germany to Japan, reported outbreaks of H5N1 in (64) poultry and wild birds; and the World Health Organization, which still says H5N1 causes a worldwide threat, recoded 72 human (65) , 32 of them fatal. The major outbreak, entering its (66) year, is still in the developing countries of Asia. Indonesia (67) accounted for 19 of the 32 H5N1 deaths; Vietnam, (68) 5. But there are signs of (69) . The number of human deaths has been (70) since peaking at 79 in 2006. And fewer countries reported outbreaks in 2009 than in 2008. Partnership researchers compared notes on the effectiveness of control measures. Scientists reported that carefully (71) killing can be just as effective as wide spread killing, and less (72) . Others reported that reducing risk among those (73) backyard poultry has to be a community-wide effort, since changing the practices of (74) farmers has proven difficult. In particular, Science Insider reported that a 3- year-old regional investigation network is making (75) in sorting out the role of wild birds. Some water birds (76) thought to be spreading the virus, such as the Asian open bill stork, are now known to quickly die of H5N1 infection, Wiriyarat says. But pas serine species , or perching birds, are apparently (77) the virus without ill effects, says an Asian zoologist. He also adds that there is a high (78) of outbreaks in poultry and passerine movements. Wiriyarat says it is still (79) what is causing the outbreak, whether there is a natural storage for H5N1, and how the virus is (80) between domestic and wild birds. But while that research continues, the most effective way to reduce the amount of virus in (81) is to control outbreaks in poultry, he says.

[听力原文]11-15All mammals, except man and the monkey, swim naturally from birth. For man, like the monkey, it is not instructive to float. Deaths by drowning are common every where. In the United States alone, about 7,000 children under four drown each year.Everything possible is done to prevent such tragedies. One solution’ s particularly effective--teaching children to swim while they are still babies. Most large towns in Florida and California already run lessons for babies and infants. The idea has spread to Europe where, in several countries, special courses are now arranged for children from seven to twenty - four months. The first step is to eliminate the child’ s fear of the water. Next, he’s taught to float. Once he can do this naturally and without fear, the child grasps the technique and can push forward himself through the water. What animals swim from birth()
Passage One Growing up, I earned my best marks for playing well with others. For my husband, I lived in three different countries in five years, and while abroad, 1 easily sparked friendships by starting book clubs and hosting girls’ nights. When it came to making friends, I had never failed until the birth of my first child. My husband and I relocated from Moscow to Alexandria in 2006. I gave birth to our daughter, Eloise, that December. Soon after her arrival, I sought friendships in places where I thought I could meet cool new moms. In mommy-and-me yoga class, Eloise and I lunched with the yoga ladies and their babies with regularity, and true to form, I hosted my first yoga-moms playgroup. Months passed, and Eloise and I became a fixture on the playgroup circuit. The moms and I talked and shared nursing nightmares and milestone moments. One year after moving to Alexandria, I measured my social success by the large number of guests at our backyard picnic. But as I walked the crowd, I realized that my eyes had glazed over and my mind had wandered away from many of the conversations. My new so-called friends surrounded me, but with little to say to these ladies outside of playgroup. I realized I had only created the appearance of friendships. As a new mom in my carly 30s, I longed for the friendship bonds I had enjoyed in my 20s. Times of change and stress had always sent mc running into the arms of family and my best girlfriends from high school and college, a small group of women I have laughed and cried with for more than 15 years. According to research and my own experiences, women seek comfort in other females during times of stress. Like many new moms, work and family demands had separated me from my closest girlfriends. I thought that having a baby would increase my circle of close friends, but despite a supportive husband, hundreds of Facebook friends and a full mommy-and-me schedule, I felt like a high schooler alone at the lunch table. I struggled for months to turn my new acquaintances into real friends. And add to my baby-talk tiredness a weird episode, in which one playgroup mom breast-fed another’s baby, and an uncomfortable request from another, who asked me to hide financial and immigration papers from her cheating husband, and I started to rethink these friendship. Eventually, I divorced the yoga-moms playgroup because I realized that it takes more than a baby in common to develop a true friendship. I decided to spend quality time with Eloise and people we really enjoyed like my neighbor who is 20 years older than I and has kids in college--rather than force false relationships to fill up my mommy-and-me schedule. The author moved to Alexandria because ______.
A. she was a great travcler
B. her husband was transferred
C. she was expecting her daughter
D. she wanted to meet cool new moms
The Alliance for Global Cancer Control issued its first public statement today, calling for the rapid implementation of the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC). The Alliance, the first worldwide coalition addressing global cancer control, emphasized that eliminating tobacco use could prevent an estimated 30% of all cancer cases and 90% of all lung cancer cases. In the statement, issued at the World Conference on Tobacco or Health in Helsinki, the Alliance for Global Cancer Control supports and accepts shared responsibility for worldwide implementation of the FCTC. The FCTC is the first global health treaty and intends to curb the tobacco epidemic. More than 30 organizations signed the statement including the World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Union Against Cancer (UICC)."The FCTC provides a unique opportunity for the global cancer control community to join forces with the tobacco control community to stop the spread of the tobacco epidemic. For the reduction of the cancer burden and for the benefit of future generations, the Alliance for Global Cancer Control calls for action across countries, sectors and disciplines to reverse current trends in the fight against tobacco globally," said Dr. John Seffrin, President of UICC.
