For most Americans, the word "poverty" suggests destitution: an inability to provide a family with nutritious food, clothing, and reasonable shelter. But only a small number of the 35 million persons classified as "poor" by the Census Bureau fit that description. While the poor are generally well-nourished, some poor families do experience hunger, meaning a temporary discomfort due to food shortages. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), 13 percent of poor families and 2.6 percent of poor children experience hunger at some point during the year. In most cases, their hunger is short-term. Eighty-nine percent of the poor report their families have "enough" food to eat, while only 2 percent say they "often" do not have enough to eat.The typical American defined as poor by the government has a car, air conditioning, a refrigerator, a stove, a clothes washer and dryer, and a microwave. He has two color televisions, cable or satellite TV reception, a VCR or DVD player, and a stereo. He is able to obtain medical care. His home is in good repair and is not overcrowded. By his own report, his family is not hungry and he had sufficient funds in the past year to meet his family’s essential needs. While this individual’s life is not well-off, it is equally far from the popular images of frightening poverty conveyed by the press. We can learn from the passage that the poor American life()
A. can afford all modern products
B. means no house for the family
C. is different in the eyes of the government and the press
D. only belongs to those who do not have enough food to eat

Dear Mr. Steele,We are writing in reply to your letter of April 5th, in which you asked for our advice concerning the marketing of motor-cycles in the western part of your country. At the moment, it would seem to us that it is not possible to give a definite answer about the prospects for such a plan. This is especially so, since there are such vast differences between the various places in that part of your country. It would appear to us that your best way is to conduct an area sales survey. In addition to the survey, we also advise you to make a personal visit to those places. This would enable you to know more about local economic environment to conduct the sales survey. It is quite vital for planning a major marketing venture. We hope you can accept our suggestion and look forward to hearing from you again in the near future.Yours sincerely,C. To: Robert Williams, School of ArchitectureFrom: James. JohnsonSubject: Air-conditioning Installation Costs for East HallDate: June 4, 2006I am writing to inform you of the costs of installing air-conditioning for the seven offices and two studio classrooms in East Hall.Office and Classroom InstallationEstimates were obtained from three contractors on the costs of covering the offices and classrooms. All these three were in the $20,000 to $25,000 range. The work would take about three weeks.Because the central unit would be installed on the roof, some noise problems might occur during a four-or five-day period. And this work could be started from this weekend, and the overtime labor costs of about $1,500 have been included in the estimates.Additional InstallationBecause a larger installation, including a more powerful central unit, would be necessary to handle the halls and stairways, an additional $6,000 would be required for the equipment. If this additional work were delayed until a later time, a new central unit would be required along with changes in the pipe way.Subject: (46) Costs for East HallOffice and Classroom Installation:1.
